Our brief with Shellbrook House was to renovate and extend a country farmhouse on a quiet country road on the shore near Ramelton. The two-and-a-half storey farmhouse had been unoccupied for a number of years before our client contacted us seeking a rejuvenation of the house, and on an idyllic, quiet shorefront road, we were instantly captivated by the site and existing house. The deep stone walls and 20th century fittings and finishes have a scintillating charm, accentuated by the contemporary addition to the rear and side of the house.
The extension houses the kitchen, dining and living areas of the home, and glazing opens the split-level layout to the sea and allows the spaces to soak up light. The light-filled kitchen at ground level serves as a family rendezvous, and sitting in the intermediate-level dining area provides a view over Lough Swilly. Upstairs to the living room, and you are greeted with a stunning vista over the water and across to Inishowen. The extension is then tied in to the existing house by the upstairs corridor, linking the living space to the refrubished bedroom quarters.

I guess building is always a challenging space and your team is critical to the success of the project. Allan Curran Architects have been a wonderful leader on our design team. John, Roci, Julie and Gareth all come with a can-do approach and a great sense of assurance and professionalism. From design to project management and BCMS co-ordination they have shown to be very well organised and always ahead in relation to decision with makes for a smooth transition on site. Their communication is impeccable an in truth very decent, kind and caring team players. I can highly commend and recommend Allan Curran Architects.
Diarmuid O Sullivan, Carrickreagh DevelopmentsI was extremely pleased with the quality of work and service given by Allan Curran Architects Ltd., from the outset of the project to its completion. At all times the service was both personal and professional from all staff. If I were to undertake another such project I would seek the services of Allan Curran Architects without hesitation.
Jack and Elizabeth, Co. DonegalWe bought a pretty standard bungalow in 2001. At the time we paid no attention to important factors such as natural light sources , the flow of rooms or there intended usage, we simply wanted a house to sleep in! Some years later we started our family and quickly discovered like so many , that our main living space was not compatible for our needs, insofar that the house seemed to suffocate us. We were faced with a major decision to sell and build, or renovate. Decision made and an architect secured, we began the journey. We choose to go with an amazing architect from Allan Curran Architects. Throughout the project, John worked closely with us to ensure our needs were discussed, challenged and built into the plans. Expectations were clear with regards to budgets, lead times and next steps. The process was stress free and I can’t recommend John and his team enough. We moved out of the house at the end of June 2016 and we moved home in September 2016. I call it home now, because I can honestly say that I love my home. It has captured me and provokes positive energies in my family. Our kitchen is flooded in natural light, our once modest garden is now a focal point for us. We have spent and will continue to spend early mornings and late evenings appreciating the tranquility it gives us, our extended families and friends.
